Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • All data, program code, methods, and outside information referenced is cited using DOIs, journal citations, and/or URLs when available.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • A cover letter will be provided with the manuscript addressing how the submitted manuscript meets the standards of authorship, originality, quality research, and disclosure of conflict of interest outlined in Editorial Policies. The cover letter also names a corresponding author and an associate editor, if applicable.

Author Guidelines

Preparing your Manuscript:

Prior to submitting a manuscript, authors should read and acknowledge the Organelle Editorial Policies outlining expectations for work published in Organelle

Formatting and structure:

Research articles 

Manuscripts should be submitted online as OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document files that are single spaced with wide margins and all pages numbered. 

Research reports are expected to contain each of the following sections:

  • Title page listing full names, running titles, and affiliations of all contributing authors (see Authorship for expectations for all listed authors)
  • Abstract containing Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and a Conclusion as well as a list of 5-10 key words
  • Introduction offering enough information to contextualize motivations of the work and addressing the key questions inspiring the work
  • Results providing qualitative/quantitative data that concisely illustrates findings
  • Discussion providing brief explanation of results, addresses motivating questions and unknowns addressed in introduction using results, and examines limitations and strengths of the execution
  • Materials and Methods providing thorough and organized explanation of materials and methods utilized to facilitate reproducibility
  • Acknowledgments listing individuals/companies who contributed to the work but do not qualify for authorship  (see Authorship for expectations for all listed authors). If there are no acknowledgements, write “No acknowledgements to report”
  • Funding listing sources of financial support for the project. If there is no funding to address, write “No funding to report” 
  • Conflict of interest disclosing all affiliations and financial involvement (i.e., employment, consultancies, honoraria, stock ownership or options, expert testimony, grants, patents received or pending, royalties) with any organization or entity having financial interest in, or in financial competition with, the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript. Any support that could be seen to influence findings must be clearly identified. If there is no conflict of interest to declare, include the statement "The authors have no conflict of interest to report."
  • Datasets/Data Availability Statement describing accessibility of provided data
  • References providing an exhaustive list of all sources referenced in order of appearance. Please use APA formatting for all references.
  • Tables providing data or supplementing the text should be numbered according to their appearance in text and each on a separate page, or integrated into the main body. All tables should be in an editable format
  • Figures supplementing the text or showcasing results referenced in the main body should be numbered according to their appearance in the text and each on a separate page, or integrated into the main body
  • Supplementary Material providing peer-reviewed materials or data directly relevant to the conclusion that is not not presentable through text or images, or not included in the main work for conciseness should be included in a separate document

Reviews

Manuscripts should be submitted as Microsoft Word files that are double spaced with wide margins and all pages numbered. 

Reviews should be shorter than 8,000 words and contain the following sections: 

  • Title page listing full names, running titles, and affiliations of all contributing authors (see Authorship for expectations for all listed authors) and including one-sentence summary stating key point
  • Abstract outlining background, objective, methods, results, and conclusion, as well as a list of 5-10 key words
  • Introduction & background briefly explaining main point and goals
  • Main body providing experimental evidence and interpretation/synthesis 
  • Conclusion and future directions briefly summarizing significance and remaining questions
  • References providing an exhaustive list of all sources referenced in order of appearance. Include all authors, the year of publication, the full title of the journal article, the journal abbreviation, the volume, the first and last page numbers, and the DOI if available.

    Please use the following format for all references:

    Author Last Name, Author First Initial(s)., (Date of Publication). Title. Journal Abbreviation. Volume Number, First Page - Last Page. DOI.

    Example:

  • Tables providing data or supplementing the text should be numbered according to their appearance in text and each on a separate page, or integrated into the main body. All tables should be in an editable format
  • Figures supplementing the text or showcasing results referenced in the main body should be numbered according to their appearance in the text and each on a separate page, or integrated into the main body
  • Supplementary Material providing peer-reviewed materials or data directly relevant to the conclusion that is not not presentable through text or images, or not included in the main work for conciseness should be referenced in the main body and included in a separate document

Submitting your Manuscript 

Manuscripts will be submitted via the submissions tab. Along with your manuscript, please provide a Cover Letter addressing how your manuscript meets the standards of authorship, originality, quality research, and disclosure of conflict of interest outlined in Editorial Policies. In the Cover Letter, please include contact information for the Corresponding Author and name an Associate Editor - an individual with expertise in the field of research who has not collaborated with the authors within 3 years.
